May 16 - On this day in geek history in 2005 Sony unveiled the PlayStation 3 for the first time. the debut came at that year’s E3 as part of Sony’s keynote address. The console was not playable at the time, but game demonstrations were shown running on development kits. The controller show with the prototype was nicknamed the ‘Boomerang’.
The prototypes that were shown featured three Ethernet ports, 2 HDMI ports and six USB ports; however when the console was shown at the following year’s (2006) E3 those specs had been trimmed down one Ethernet port, 1 HDMI port and four USB ports. This change was most likely due to cost saving measures.
